A new method to estimate the economic activity supported by offshore wind: A hypothetical extraction study for the United Kingdom

As well as their role in contributing towards emissions reductions targets, it is increasingly relevant for policymakers to understand the contribution that renewable energy technologies make economy. Various methods have been used quantify impacts, such job counts, surveys and measures based on economic statistics. Economic modelling approaches other hand appear offer an ability both provide metrics of interest crucially understanding activities which support contribution. In this paper, we implement a new method estimating activity supported by activities; applying ‘hypothetical extraction’ offshore wind—to identify U.K. activity, quality national emissions. By undertaking partial extraction wind from aggregated input–output (IO) table then subsequently one separated out electricity sector, highlight value more disaggregation technology-specific detail accounts. The results our fullest suggest 2010, United Kingdom 10 240 jobs, with 9 these jobs either medium or high skill, contributed £780 million gross domestic product (GDP). addition, significant portion attributable expansions capacity rather than operational activities.
